Today, we are talking about how to wax a Barbour jacket – not my jacket, but Christian’s jacket. Christian from Theo and Harris, by the way, and I just can’t frankly wait to get into how to rewax a Barbour jacket. The Iron Snail This article is about how to wax a Barbour jacket perfectly, make it look like you just bought it, not like you re-waxed it – because sometimes it just looks sticky, or there’s too much wax, or it doesn’t look matte, or just doesn’t look as good. So I think I figured out how to rewax a Barbour jacket well, but we will talk about that. We will talk about how to fix a Barbour jacket when you ruin it with wax and spill most of the wax on the jacket. And then I followed Barbour’s video on how they did it where there’s this like cool guy walking through the field, and then he, you know, does it, and I need to point out a very important thing that I found out that makes it way easier to do this because I almost ended this article by saying just send this jacket off to Barbour because re-waxing a Barbour jacket is super annoying, but then everything changed, baby.   The Iron Snail The Jacket We’re Working With Today The Iron Snail Before we get into anything, though, the specimen that we’re looking at today, like I said, is not my jacket. It is a creature that has pranced around the streets of New Jersey for, I think, three years, and it is worn by Christian Zeron at Theo and Harris. There are a lot of parts where there’s just no wax, which you can tell by the lighter color, and I can see the texture of the fabric kind of come out because it’s not matted down by wax. And then a cool side note is the aging on some of the buttons on his jacket, which is really cool. I really like that, and I look forward to mine doing that, although I do have about 80 jackets, so I don’t know if mine will ever do that. Here’s What You Need (And What You’re Up Against) The Iron Snail Okay, so very quickly, here is what you need: a sponge – this is very important, and you can get the wrong thing. Also, I don’t even know if a sponge is the best thing to use, and I’ll tell you why in a little bit. You need a way to heat water and a receptacle to heat water, and then you need hell in a can. The wax itself. It is my worst enemy – it is trash and garbage. The way it’s constructed, when you put it in water, a big air bubble comes in the bottom of the can, so it flips over and dumps all the wax out. It flipped over again when I put it on the table and spilled all over the jacket, but you do need it, so you should get it. You definitely need the wax. You also need a hair dryer – technically, you don’t, but in order to get anything close to a factory finish, you definitely need a hair dryer, and you need a lot of paper towels or non-paper towels, but you need to be able to wash them, and I don’t know if the wax is gonna make your washing machine gross or anything like that. Quick Apartment Update (Plus Tea Time) I just went to pick up a new couch, and now I’m having a little tea while I write. So now this is a nice, cozy article. It’s one of those cool reupholstered mid-century modern couches. I made green tea because I heard in a podcast that it’s good for your microbiome. It has two scoops of organic sugar, and now let’s talk about Barbour. Also, I have a funny story to tell you about the couch – I’ll tell you about it in the middle of this article for a little Barbour break. The Basic Step-by-Step Process The Iron Snail So this is the most basic step-by-step on how to rewax a Barbour jacket, and then we’ll get into details and stuff I missed and stuff I found out. First thing obviously, lay your jacket on the table. Do a big open space with a jacket if you have a big open space where the jacket can lay completely flat, and put something under it because chances are you’re going to spill wax or some wax will come off onto the jacket onto the table, and unless you’re the guy in the Barbour ad, that’s not good. The Iron Snail Then all you really have to do is heat up some water, put it in a pot or a bowl, which I did in this apartment, and dunk the little can from hell in there, and that wax will melt. A fun thing about the can, like I said before, is that it’ll actually tip over and dump into the bucket of water. Then, really, all you have to do is, once the wax is melted, you’re just dipping in the sponge – although we need to get into sponges in a second. You dip in the sponge and you just rub it all over the jacket. Important Temperature Tips The Iron Snail When Barbour says to do this in a hot room or outside during the summer, they really mean that. Do it as hot as you possibly can because it’s like 60 in my house, and the wax was almost dry before hitting the jacket, and right when you put on the jacket, it’s drying. The harder you can do it, the better. If you can do it in the summer on the hottest day of the year, do it because it dries incredibly fast, and it’s not fun at all to do it like that until this one little thing that I found out changed everything. How Barbour Actually Does It (And Why We Can’t) The Iron Snail So the first thing you need to do is take your Barbour jacket and throw it in an industrial laundry machine with some heavy detergent – that is a joke. That is actually the one thing you can’t do. So the fabric is waxed with Barbour jackets, and it runs through these two cylinders that are hot with wax on them, which melts them into the fabric, and then the jacket is stitched. So, since the jacket is already stitched, you can’t really get wax perfectly embedded into the fabric, so really, when you’re re-waxing a Barbour jacket, you are putting a second layer over that original layer that wore down a little bit. The Hair Dryer Trick The Iron Snail Okay, so technically, you can stop there, and that’s totally fine. But unless you do it really perfectly with the perfect amount of wax, your jacket’s going to look very shiny and waxy, kind of wet, and generally not that good, kind of like a trash bag instead of a nice jacket. So the big tip that Barbour has on the can and that a lot of people say is that you should blow dry the jacket, and what that does obviously is melt the wax, and then the wax sinks into the fibers of the jacket, so it kind of goes deeper in, but you could still over wax and have a problem, which I did. The Couch Story (Finally) So I was getting this couch, and the guy was delivering it, and he had a Perfecto on, or I guess a motorcycle jacket because it wasn’t Schott, but he had a leather jacket on, and I said, “Hey, I like that jacket,” and he said, “Thanks, I really like leather,” and I said, “Wait a minute, that’s crazy – I think we like leather for two different reasons.” And then, yeah, then he gave me this couch, so I was pretty glad that the seats were not leather. The Blow Drying Technique The Iron Snail When you’re blow drying, have a paper towel or towel – whatever you’re using – and as you blow dry, you’re basically doing a circular motion, briefly just getting it on the fabric. You can do it two different ways. I did it a heavier way where I took up more wax because I wanted it to look pretty dry. I didn’t want it to have any stickiness or anything to it because I know Christian, at the end of the day, wants form over function a little bit more with his jacket, so I didn’t want it to be greasy and getting on his seats or anything. You could favor water resistance, but I favored the style and a flat look instead. The Big Mistake (And How I Fixed It) The Iron Snail And then a tragedy happened, which – it’s always better when you tell a friend of yours “Hey, I’ll do this for you as a favor,” and then you ruin their jacket. So, I basically spilled a third of the can of wax on this part of the jacket. So that wasn’t good. But that’s actually how I found out about using a paper towel and melting and sopping it up, and it basically blends in with the rest now, so you really can’t mess up and over wax, which is something from what I’ve seen on forms and stuff people are worried about. It looks like you’re all good. The Truth About Sponges The Iron Snail The tip that I have with the sponges is actually also pretty simple: don’t use a sponge. That’s my tip. The sponge that they used in the Barbour video is different than the one I use, so maybe those ones are better, and the sponge is a sponge so it does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and it soaks up the wax immediately, and it makes it tougher to spread, and you can’t really slide it around on the jacket because it’s just sucking all that wax back up. The Paper Towel Game-Changer The Iron Snail I ended up just trying it with a paper towel, and it was leaps and bounds better than a sponge. The paper towel basically just ended up getting clogged with wax and then kind of acted as a squeegee the whole time, so I was just sliding around on the jacket. It cut the time it took to cover the jacket and wax in half or more, and it also made it 10 times easier to spread out the wax onto the jacket, and it was like night and day. Doing that, actually, a paper towel made me want to try it with a squeegee, and I would pour the wax on the jacket and pull it across with a squeegee. I think that would have been super satisfying, and I think it would have worked, but I didn’t have a squeegee, so I just used a paper towel. I don’t know the exact weight – I’ve heard 24-ounce rugged twill, which is very heavy, but it could also be 24 ounces with the wax applied, which means it’s probably an 18-ounce twill with wax on top of it, so I don’t really know. The Iron Snail I just want to say I think the pattern, this camo pattern if you’re interested in that, is screen printed on. So, with time, it’ll probably wear and patina off and look really cool as well. Either way, very, very heavy. Filson advertises this as holding up an engine block so that’s a testament to the leather and the twill. I don’t think you’re gonna have an issue with your little pastrami sandwich. The Iron Snail The leather trims on this bag come from Wicket and Craig, one of the only vegetable tanning refineries in the U.S., and is proprietary made for Filson. I’m pretty sure it’s hot stuffed, just like you, hot stuff! So there are oils and waxes in here that’ll keep it more weather-resistant, and it’s box-stitched at the bottom. There’s a nice little signature of Filson that keeps the flap closed, also made out of that leather. Nothing to complain about! The Iron Snail Hey, real quick, I also had the original briefcase in rough-out leather for a very short amount of time. The only main difference besides, of course, the outer leather is that the shoulder strap has felted wool on it, which is their most premium version, but other than that, it is functionally the same. It also comes with this dazzling shoulder strap, so if you ever need to carry more things or if you just like it on your shoulder, then you can do it. I will say, though, that it does not come with a felted wool cushion at the bottom. It doesn’t seem like it has any stuffing in it to be more comfortable. It’s not a big issue for me because I don’t put a ton of stuff in it, but it’s something to consider. But the strap is nice and it is removable. The Iron Snail Going over storage, this bag doesn’t really have a ton of storage, but for your day-to-day needs it’s probably perfect. There’s a front pocket and a back pocket, which if you have like a book or something thin, just like a thin block of wood or a tablet or something like that, then I feel like that would be great. But if you have anything that’s kind of protruding, the bag just kind of gets ugly and sticks out. But either way, it’s great that they’re there. I wish there were buttons or something to keep them closed just to keep that silhouette. The Iron Snail Then there’s also a key holder on the inside, which is great, or I don’t know, whatever you could chain up. There are little tiny pockets on the side that I feel are probably for pens. Then there are these giant meaty zippers up top that do a very good job of keeping the bag closed and ripping your laptop to absolute shreds, so definitely be careful with those. On the inside, though, there’s a main center pocket, two side pockets, and then on one of the side pockets, there are tiny little pen pockets, storage pockets for hard drives, whatever you want to put in them, wallets, or anything like that. So storage is fine. There’s no padding anywhere. This is really just twill which gets into one of the things that I don’t like about this bag. The hardware on this, I believe, is just aged brass, which is great – you could also sand it down if you wanted to get really bright and shiny and then watch it age over time, but you also don’t have to do that. The Iron Snail Okay so there are two things I don’t like about this bag that aren’t really deal breakers at all. There are solutions for both of them. The first one is the handles that you hold on with your hands. I wish there was another leather piece that would hold them together because once they break in they kind of just flop around everywhere and slap against the bag. It’s just cooler to lock them when you’re done with the bag, but I think Filson will provide them for you for a fee. So that’s kind of also a downside because you want a bag that feels complete and it seems like Filson is charging you to make it fully complete. The Iron Snail The other thing, though, like I said, is that this is a waxed rugged twill bag, and it’s great – you can leave it on the ground, water won’t come in, it can be raining, you’ll be totally fine. The only thing, though, is the inside of this is not lined or padded, so anything you put on the inside is going to get a very light sheen of oil or wax on it. It happened to my laptop and to some books I have. It doesn’t destroy anything but it definitely gets everywhere on the things that you put in there. So if they lined it I would actually really like that. There’s probably a reason that they don’t, but I think it would be nice. The Best Made Patina Monster The Iron Snail The next bag is this literal patina beast from the old Best Made before Best Made got bought out by Duluth. I haven’t seen anything from Best Made since they got bought out by Duluth, but they don’t make stuff like this anymore, so I’m very bummed out. I found this on eBay but it is purely a patina monster, so we’ll talk about that right now. The Iron Snail Like I was saying, this is from the original Best Made before they got bought out by Duluth, so if you want to get this, your best bet is on eBay. I may also sell mine. I’m not too sure, but I think there are a few on eBay all the time. They also made a duffel bag in the same leather – I can’t find that one, but either way this is a literal beast made in the USA. There are a few things about it that I like and a few things I don’t like, but we’ll get into that right now. But this is really the patina monster for a few reasons. The Iron Snail The first thing about this bag, obviously right away, that jumps out is the leather. This is all made in the USA. Best Made used to make their products only in the USA, and that’s why I think this one was originally made for $800. But this is a very, very thick vegetable-tanned undyed leather. It looks very soft and supple in the pictures they show you – it is not at all. It is creaky and super stiff, and actually the inside is not sanded down at all, so it’s actually kind of rough. It makes your fingers feel weird. The Iron Snail But the whole point of this bag obviously is just to be very, very simple and very, very well built. There’s only one pocket on the inside that you could put like a wallet or something in. Not a lot of space besides that – it’s really just a tote with a flap on the top of it so that’s really not the important part. The important part is the materials that are used – natural vegetable tan undyed leather, all from the USA. This is going to darken and soften over time. I can already see some wrinkles on it from when I opened it and closed it, but it will eventually become a dark, rich, beautiful, soft, supple leather bag. But right now, it is in its fresh, barely used state. The Iron Snail The brass hardware also follows that same philosophy because it is not aged or artificially changed in any way, so as you use this bag over time, the brass is also going to darken and oxidize and change colors and be very, very beautiful. This bag – there’s not too much to say about it besides it is a beautiful tank that you can just take with you probably for your entire life and then your child’s entire life and then their entire life. Bleu de Chauffe: Saving the Best for Last The Iron Snail Okay, the next bag is by Bleu de Chauffe, and I don’t want to say that I saved the best for last, but I saved by far the most functional bag for last. Also, this is my dual review with my neighbor Chris. The Iron Snail Me: “Chris, take it away!” Chris: “Thanks, Mike! I’m Chris, I’m a new character on the Iron Snail. Uh, maybe here for a long time, maybe not even here at all. Mike gave me this great bag, and it’s fantastic so far. Veggie-tanned leather with a good camouflage print – stands out in the city if you’re looking for a style icon but would certainly blend in if you were in, say, the woods. Nice felt accents on some of the hardware to make sure it doesn’t slip and altogether quality construction. It works for me, and I’ve got quite a lot packed in here: 16-inch MacBook Pro, Altoids, face lotion, hand lotion (Chris’s skin is the smoothest in all of Brooklyn), other accouterments (I had to look that one up) change, spare change, different currencies, different passports, a sandwich… yeah it’s all packed in there and it fits pretty well.” Me: “Thank you, Chris! Fantastic job, I couldn’t have done it better myself. I’m gonna do my own version now… just kidding! But not really.” Also, shout out to Meg, Chris’s girlfriend – she’s a stylist who always tells me my clothes are too big and my apartment is ugly. The Iron Snail As Chris said, this is vegetable tan leather on the outside. What’s really cool, though, is that this camo pattern will wear away, or just as you scratch the bag, the under color of the actual vegetable tan leather will come through, which is a light color, so it’s going to vary with color a ton. The Iron Snail It’s very tough, but I will say the main difference between this bag and the Filson and the Best Made bags is that Filson and Best Made are both American-driven, American heritage wear driven so the leather is incredibly thick and tough. Filson – the rugged twill is incredibly thick and tough, and it can hold an engine block, and you know you can’t break it. I also don’t think you can break the Bleu de Chauffe, but I feel like what you think of when you think of a French bag comes out through this bag while still keeping the utilitarian purpose. The Iron Snail So this is kind of why it’s the best all-around bag. Vegetable tan leather is very tough and will age beautifully, but it is not so thick that it won’t bend or anything like that. Also, the inside is sanded, so it’s very soft right off the bat. It has zippers that I have no doubt will last probably to the end of time, but they are not the heaviest, beefiest zippers you can get from YKK or Talon or anything like that. And at the end of the day it seems like this French bag’s goal is to be convenient and perfect for your everyday life and also a legacy piece. The Iron Snail The first pocket is just an empty pocket. I believe it is lined in nylon, and you can stick whatever you want in there, which is fine. The second pocket, though, is where the value add happens. So this bag is completely made in France, there is a signature by the person that made the bag, and there’s a little button thing at the end of the bag for some branding. But where the value really shines, though, is that this comes with a felt little laptop case that you can snap in or keep out of the bag if you’d like, and it comes with another little bag thing that reminds me of a pencil case and like elementary school. Just the fact that it comes with the bag, and it’s integrated really well with the button snaps, that is off the chain hook! Watch This Review Plot Twist: I’m Actually a Backpack Guy Now There is one thing about me that I just need to tell you real quick and it has to do with bags. I realized through buying all of these bags that usually, a day for me involves a camera bag, a tripod, a gym bag, and a briefcase, and I end up looking like a fool. So I got a new backpack, and I’ll try to carry some of these briefcases as much as I can, but I just have too much stuff, and I end up looking like a fool walking up and down the streets of New York with eight bags when I could probably do it in two. So I have to be a backpack guy mainly, and I wanted to spice it up with Cordura fabric so maybe I’ll review that if you want, maybe I won’t, who knows. The Iron Snail The Game-Changing Summer Shirts from Knickerbocker The cotton Lola shirt in the color bone is one of the most beautiful shirts that I have ever seen. This and the cotton linen Highway shirt changed how I view summer clothing because I’ve never been good at dressing in the summer – we have proof of that. But I think I finally cracked the code. Both of these are from a brand called Knickerbocker. They are made in Portugal, and they have amazing mother of pearl buttons, which, fun fact, mother of pearl is exactly what it sounds like. An oyster wraps it around sand and makes a pearl. The Iron Snail This should be a pretty good article because I feel like I cracked the code for how to dress in the summer, and it’s not like how I usually dress. There’s a lot of stuff on this list from Knickerbocker, not because they sent me anything for free but because I went on a little shopping spree because they sent me a 20% off coupon. Let’s Talk Fabric: The Cotton Lola and Highway Shirts The Iron Snail First up is the shirt that I actually may have ruined – I don’t think I ruined it. But this is the Cotton Lola shirt from Knickerbocker, 98% cotton, 2% elastane. It’s essentially like a toned-down version of seersucker fabric, which has some waves to it, so it stays lifted off of your body and keeps you cooler, and doesn’t let sweat stick to it as much. But really, this is one of the two shirts, both of them being from Knickerbocker, that made me realize what I was missing in my summer outfits. We’ll get into that later. The Iron Snail The next shirt is also from Knickerbocker. This next shirt is the cotton and linen Highway shirt again from Knickerbocker, which is probably my favorite item on the list by far. It’s unbelievable. The fabric is unbelievable, and it’s a pleasure to iron, which we’ll get into in a second. It feels beefy but airy. Everything I could possibly want in a summer shirt is here. 80% cotton, 20% linen. I’m kind of glad about that because it wrinkles less easily, but it still wrinkles a lot. The Iron Snail This isn’t really like a summer essential, it’s actually quite hot, but on summer nights it’s kind of important sometimes if you’re going to a formal event like a wedding in Italy, which I did. This is the beefy cotton Oxford button-down. I’ve learned that it’s called a button-down because there are buttons where you can button the collar down. The two other shirts I’ve mentioned so far are Camp collar shirts that are splayed open. The Iron Snail Short-sleeved button-up shirts, in general, are a lot cooler than t-shirts, at least in my experience, because you can get fabrics that lift off of your body and let things breathe better, but you can also open up the collar and let more air in if you need. Fun fact: I didn’t realize this until I was 25-26. I’m 27 now. The Iron Snail The only thing I don’t know if I really like or if I really don’t like is the monogrammed Knickerbocker initials on the bottom because you would typically put your initials there, so it’s another brand’s. Still, some people may think it’s your name. Not a huge deal, but still. The Great Pants Debate: Linen vs Cotton The Iron Snail Okay, then things get a little interesting because I have two pairs of linen basket pants in brown and black from Knickerbocker, and I do really like them, but the issue is they’re 10-ounce fabric, and it’s 80% cotton, 20% linen, which I like because it makes the fabric feel a little bit more rigid unless you get to really heavy linen. But then you’re left with this mix that you kind of have to decide how you want to go about it. Linen wrinkles, cotton wrinkles, but usually the wrinkles can come out just by the weight of the cloth moving around, so the wrinkles come out after a little bit for the most part, not 100%. The Iron Snail So, I ideally would want to steam them, but I tried it with a steamer, and it doesn’t really work because the fabric is just too heavy; nothing really relaxes. So I tried to iron it, but it’s still difficult to iron. These pants are still a little wrinkled, and I worked on ironing them for a long time. Granted, I’m not a good ironer yet, but the convenience does go down a lot when you mix these two heavier fabrics together for the summer. The Iron Snail So then you could go the other way and get a much lighter shirt like J. Crew‘s linen shirts, for example, which are nice shirts, but they are very, very, very thin, so they don’t hold their structure really at all, and that is the definition of what you probably think when people say linen is very wrinkly – it becomes a wrinkled mess. But personally, I would rather have a more structured shirt that gives me a better, crisp look for a longer amount of time than a very, very, very loose and flowy linen shirt. The Iron Snail We’re going to take a quick stop in the world of footwear, going formal and then going less formal, but there’s this brand, Velasca. I’ve seen their ads on Instagram for a long time. I like their aesthetic because it reminds me of Cape Cod in the fall, which is where I’m from, even though these are completely handmade in Italy. A long story short, they reached out to me and said, “Hey, what’s your address? We’re just going to send you some things,” and I said, “Okay!” The Iron Snail And then I wore their Derby shoes to a wedding – I didn’t actually wear them when I was officiating the wedding, but I did wear them on the day before the wedding, and they’re fantastic. On the day of the wedding, which I also recommend you get, I wore Allen Edmonds Leeds Plain Toe Blucher. I wore those which are slimmer and dressier, but the derbies from Velasca are very, very wide to the point where I would suggest you probably want to size down one at least. They’re fantastic shoes, and they’re a little formal, which is the whole thesis of this article. The Iron Snail And while on the subject of footwear, I am currently wearing my Adidas Gazelles. I bought these specifically for Italy, and the color of them that I’m wearing is called pre-loved red. I got them for Italy because there is a brand, or there was a brand called Roy Denim, and the founder was named Roy Slaper, but he has his Instagram picture where he’s walking in an all-down outfit in red shoes, and I think about that all the time so that’s why I got these shoes. The OAS Brand and Textile Talk The Iron Snail And then we have the shirts, but the entire brand does this, so I should just say the brand. This brand makes shirts with crazy textiles and crazy textures. I’m wearing one of their terry towel shirts right now. I have another one in a different color pattern. I have one more that’s this really fascinating weave.  It’s not a box weave. I don’t even know what weave it is, but it feels like a robe at a hotel. It’s amazing, and the brand is OAS. This is splitting decidedly between the more formal stuff from Knickerbocker that you could get away with kind of at night if you’re going out to more casual stuff that you could wear if you’re chilling by the pool or something like that. The Sock and Shorts Situation The Iron Snail Okay, next up are shorts and socks. These are always linked. Depending on which shorts you wear dictates what socks you should wear. A tale as old as time. Either way, American Trench sent me a bunch of socks because they’re great socks. The retro stripes are awesome, and the wool merino socks are awesome – not because I got them for free but because they are kind of iconic in the sock world. The Iron Snail And then for shorts, we have Wellen from Huckberry. It’s a house brand, and the shorts are fantastic. They are a great deal. However, if I could do it again, I would say my best advice with shorts is to look at the length that you think you want and then go two inches higher on your inseam. That’s my only mistake – I think these shorts are a little too long, and if I went just a tiny bit shorter, they’d be okay. T-Shirts and the Big Summer Style Revelation The Iron Snail Okay, I know you’ve been waiting for this since I mentioned that this article was about how to dress in the summer. It’s t-shirt time. I figured something out about t-shirts this year, but I’ll get on that in a second. I got a bunch of shirts from Imogene and Willie, which I’ve reviewed before, and I changed my thoughts. I still wish that the fabric of these shirts was a little different, and I wish that the collar had a heavier rib and not really the same texture as the shirt – that would have been better built. But I really like quirky phrases on shirts. I think it’s so funny, it’s so fun, and it adds a little bit of edge to an outfit, which I found to be something that I really want all the time. The Iron Snail Very rarely do I feel stylish or cool in the summer. I usually wear a t-shirt and shorts, and a lot of times, I just end up feeling like a dweeb. Then I’m like, “I don’t look cool,” but last summer, the big revelation was two things: formalizing and tailoring. In the fall or winter, you can get away with being less formal because you have a jacket where you can show your personality, or you have a sweater or something like that kind of inherently gets more formal, and you’re covering yourself up, and oversized looks are okay. As it gets warmer, you lose a lot of things where you can show like “Hey, I’m really into denim” or “I’m really into this cool jacket,” but stepping up that dress level – boom. And on that note, if you decide to formalize in summer, the other thing you have to do is make sure your formalized clothes fit really, really well. What I’m trying to get at is if you’re going to formalize in summer a little bit, you should tailor your clothes, bring them to the tailor so they fit you perfectly, and show off that smoking hot summer bod. Knickerbocker was the key to me figuring that out because the first two shirts that I talked about are cropped probably for most people, but I’m not a very tall person. I have a small torso, so it doesn’t look that cropped, but what it does look like is really well-fitted, and when I put those two shirts on, I feel like a million bucks. The Iron Snail The 50-Year History of Timberland Boots 50 years ago this year, Abington Shoe Company in Massachusetts took a huge risk and they used a lot of revolutionary materials in a boot. Five years after that, the boot was so successful they named their company after the boot – Timberlands. Why did this Massachusetts Boot Company, making boots for New England construction workers, become a literal memeified sensation in New York City? Why is New York City so obsessed with the Timberland boots? And that has to do with six things: two revolutionary technologies that Timberland tried and really became successful for and changed the path of boots forever, one other technology that wasn’t new but that put this boot really over the top for New Yorkers and New Englanders, and everything like that, and finally, Timberlands do two things to the wearer that are rather superficial but makes everybody kind of like the boots more. So today we’re going to explain those six things, and we’re going to talk about sizing and comfort and stuff like that, and if these boots are worth it because there’s a lot of articles saying these are trash, they’re not worth it anymore, they’re not what they used to be – all of that. So we’ll address that at the end. Let’s get into this Timberland boot review. The Iron Snail   Let’s Talk Sizing and Comfort (The Boring Stuff First) The Iron Snail Okay, let’s go. Let’s get the most boring things out of the way first: sizing and comfort. A lot of people say these aren’t comfortable boots. I guess I would agree – there’s not much padding or cushioning or anything like that. They’re very simply constructed. It’s just thick, hard rubber on the outside with a little cardboard on the inside. I still don’t mind them. They just feel like regular boots – nothing amazing, nothing terrible. Sizing: stick to your regular size. That’s what I did. If you’ve never worn boots before, go a size down from your shoe size, but I highly suggest that since these are Timberlands, you just go to the store and try them on, okay? I know it’s the internet age, but sometimes it’s nice to support your local Macy’s. The Superficial Stuff (But in a Good Way) The Iron Snail There were obviously superficial reasons why people like these boots, and by superficial, I don’t mean in a bad way, but I mean aesthetically, what did they have going for them? The first thing is that they are nubuck, which is leather with the top shaved down and softer. It feels a little fluffier, but what it also does is it looks a little newer longer than smooth leather because it’s harder to scratch and scuff and see those. So, if you’re trying to keep these boots looking new all the time, it’s much easier with nubuck than with smooth leather. The Iron Snail The other great thing these boots do is they add a solid inch, inch and a half to your height. So if you’re just, you know, creasing that six-foot line and you really want to take it, put these on. And if you’re not creasing that six-foot line, you probably want to get Timberland Pros because those add even more height – not that I have any experience trying to look taller in my life. I’m a healthy five-nine. The Iron Snail The other thing about Timberlands is how incredibly ridiculously recognizable they are. If I were standing 20 feet away from you, you probably couldn’t see my sweatshirt that well, same as my jeans, but you could tell what boots I was wearing. A History Lesson: Before Timberlands The Iron Snail In order to understand why these boots were so revolutionary, we have to go back briefly into history and see what boots we were dealing with at the time. Now, this was a technology that was invented by a military boot brand – kind of, they made most things for the military, and then it slowly caught on. Timberlands may not have been the first to do it, but they are obviously the most recognized for doing it, and I believe they’re the ones that made this what it is. The Iron Snail Either way, before this technology existed, we had wellies and rubber boots. We also had L. L. Bean boots and stuff like that with rubber bottoms. Essentially, we had rubber, which was great, but I can’t particularly picture Biggie Smalls walking around with knee-high rubber boots in Brooklyn. We did have Wellies and rubber boots in general. We also, of course, had regular leather boots. Leather is not water-impermeable, but you can wax them to make them pretty close. If you’re outside all day, they will still soak through the leather, and on top of that, they’re also stitched, so you’re putting a ton of holes in your leather anyway. Even if you use the best of the best, most watertight construction, water will still come in eventually, and they are not waterproof – they’re very water resistant. Why Haven’t Timberlands Replaced Everything? The Iron Snail Now, before we even get to the technology, the question is: well, why isn’t everybody just wearing boots made like Timberlands? Why do Wellies still exist? Why do leather boots not made like Timberlands still exist? And the answer is really polar opposite for each one of them. The reason why Wellies and stuff still exist is because they are truly watertight, water impermeable for as long as that rubber is together. Timberlands have a few snags along the way that don’t really make that happen. And then other traditionally made leather boots have something else that Timberlands don’t have, which is a longer lifespan. You can really open up different leather boots, replace a lot of the things, and rebuild them – Timberlands, not so much. So they don’t fill every gap, but they do fill a lot. The Secret Sauce: Silicone Tanning The Iron Snail The second thing that happened – with the first thing being the big revolutionary thing – but the second thing is also incredibly important for the leather industry: silicone tanning. Leather is usually tanned in two ways: Chrome tanning and vegetable tanning. Vegetable tanning is done with tree bark and stuff like that, and Chrome tanning is done with chromium salts. Chromium salts are not that good for the environment, or sometimes people’s feet, but silicone tanning is a relatively new way of tanning that is very revolutionary for the world of waterproof leather boots because silicone tanning is a way where you can infuse silicone into your leather which makes it virtually waterproof. The Iron Snail Silicone is kind of like the rubber of the plastic world, but it’s specifically not a plastic. It’s made – if you think of beach sand, that is the very beginning of silicone, which I believe is silica, and then that gets turned into silicon after it’s purified, and then it becomes silicone, and then it gets infused to boots and everything like that. I do think there is a layer of DWR on top of these boots, which is a durable, water-repellent finish. I think that’s why water just beads off of them, and it looks like there’s a force field around the boots when I walk in the water. That will 100% wear away over time, but you can replace it with sprays and stuff like that. But the silicone tanning of these boots means that there’s water repellency kind of baked into the boots that will stay virtually forever. The Game-Changer: Injection Molding and Insulation The Iron Snail And finally, before we get to the most revolutionary part of these boots, there was something else that made them incredibly helpful all year long in New York, in New England, wherever you may be, and that is 400 grams of PrimaLoft insulation – AKA something that will keep your feet warmer in the winter, possibly a little cooler in the summer depending on how hot it is. Probably not – you probably want an unlined boot at that rate. The Iron Snail But the biggest issue that plagues leather boots, in general, is their construction when we’re talking about them being waterproof because, with some of them, the leather bends out, and some of them go under, but either way, you are left with a massive gaping hole ready to suck in any fluid that it comes in contact with. So fusion is really the word. Fusion is the word of the day here because you can rubberize leather, you can do a few different things to leather, but what is hard to do is put something in there seamlessly that doesn’t chip off or come off. When we’re talking about the bottom of boots, you’re not trying to fuse something when you’re sewing it, but you’re trying to get as close to a seal as you possibly can. The Iron Snail What Timberland really took hold of was injection molding. So instead of sewing anything, we are basically like blowing and shooting rubber and everything around the bottom of the boot, and that’s as close as we can possibly get to infusing because it’s molten rubber – it just bonds with the leather super tight. It’s almost impossible to rip those two things apart. That’s why you can’t really repair these boots that often, but what that means is water can also not come into your feet and wet your socks. So that’s great – you never want to have anything inside of your feet besides blood. The New York Connection The Iron Snail Now the question arises: are these worth it? Because a lot of people are saying not anymore. That still doesn’t really fully answer the question of why these boots get so popular in New York. What was that special thing that they had? There’s something different with fresh stream water where I tested these boots and the water in New York. I would contemplate drinking stream water right now if I was really thirsty, but then there is the New York puddle, the New York water, the New York flowing water down the street. New York City, of course. The Iron Snail I live in New York City right now, and there is no feeling like walking into water past your boot line or past your shoe line and getting your socks wet. Stream water is dirty with dirt. I’m assuming there’s algae and stuff like that, maybe some bad viruses. I have no idea what New York puddle water is. So water resistance and waterproofness are incredibly important, especially if you are outside commuting, walking around, and doing other things in New York in the 80s and 90s that a lot of people did. From Construction Sites to Hip-Hop Icons The Iron Snail Now, the path that they probably took is as follows: I’m assuming they actually started off with New England construction workers. They wore them on the clock, off the clock, and they picked up momentum in New England – people really like them in the winter trudging through the snow and everything like that. New York is not that far from New England, so they probably traveled there rather quickly. Construction workers were wearing them, city people started wearing them, and then, of course, finally, the true answer: hip-hop picked them up. This wouldn’t be a complete Timberland boot review if we didn’t mention all of these momentous icons who changed the entire scene of music. They are wearing big Tim’s with the laces open and walking around with big shorts. Watch This Review Are They Still Worth It? The Iron Snail Now, the million-dollar question is: did these boots go downhill? Do they lose quality over time, and are they now remnants of what they used to be? It’s hard to find what they used to be. I will say one thing I really don’t like about these boots is that there is fake stitching on the rubber – not a fan of that. But in terms of actual quality and the use of materials, I like them. I think they’re good. They could be a little bit better for the price tag – there could be leather where there is cardboard, there could be things like that, but in terms of mass-produced brands and the value that you’re getting, I don’t think these are a worse value than Doc Martens, the base level, at all. If anything, I would say these are a better deal. I think because they do have some roots in construction, Timberlands can never totally veer away from quality in their main flagship models. The Iron Snail The History Behind JK Superduty Boots John Khadzhi uses 100-year-old forged French hammers and Swedish lasting pliers to make high-heeled JK Superduty boots. These boots are nailed together, screwed together, glued together, and stitched together. They’re firefighter boots, they’re logger boots, they’re construction boots. You’re looking at some of the toughest boots in the world that just so happen to have changed the lives of the toughest people on the planet for the last 400 years. I like to put on two pairs of sockie wockies; otherwise, my feetsie weetsies will get blisty wisties, and that’s no good. The Iron Snail   The Haters and Today’s Deep Dive The Iron Snail Today, we are looking at why the JK Superduty boots have a big old fatty on the back of them, which, of course, is the heel. These boots are rough and tough, and you can hold a lot more weight and not have sore feet than you can with any other boots. And while these boots are some of the toughest boots in the world, you still have to make sure that you get the right ones. These have the honey sole, and when you look them up on Reddit, you will see a comment from Reddit user smokejumperbro. Smokejumperbro says, “The boots that I am wearing, these JK Superduty boots, are called loft boots, and they are for office work like sewing and eating ice cream,” which is a hysterical comment but also strangely close to my job. The Iron Snail And finally, as amazing as these boots are, they still have some haters – not JK boots specifically, but these logger PNW (Pacific Northwest) boots in general, and we call those haters the barefoot bros. Some of the barefoot bros, not all the barefoot bros, but either way, a further breakdown of what we will be talking about in the article is here: The Iron Snail Number one: Why the F do these boots actually have a heel? What does that help with? The keyword: dorsiflexion. Number one (a): Do these boots make your feet weaker by wearing them because of the heel? Number two: The bottom section of these boots is fuzzy, but the top is not. What is with that? Number three: Why do we have like 12,000 stacks of leather on these boots? Number four: Why, when I first put these boots on, did I feel a lump right on the side of my boots? Welcome to The Iron Snail The Iron Snail What’s up, everyone? It’s Michael back with another old article for the Iron Snail. This channel focuses on two things: one, incredibly deep dives into every technical aspect of a shoe, of a boot, of a clothing article, whatever it may be, and two, fashion stuff. And today, of course, we are deep diving, incredibly deep and dangerously, into JK Superduty boots. The Tech Specs: Breaking Down These Bad Boys The Iron Snail Let’s just get to know these boots first. Let’s go through the basics, and then we’ll get to the crazy details. However, we need the foundation. These big fat fatties are 10 inches in height. They use 8 to 9-ounce leather, the insole is genuine oak-tanned USA leather, the midsole is genuine oak-tanned USA leather, and the arch support is USA leather. These boots are made of USA leather. These boots are designed to always keep your foot in a resting position to distribute weight evenly, so standing on a log, my feet would normally kind of bend and conform around the tree unless I was wearing rather stiff boots. Now they don’t – they stay straight, and they get much less tired as I walk around and as I try to balance on something like this. The Iron Snail Really, you see this come out if you stand on ladders all day. You want a boot that doesn’t let your foot kind of sag over the ladder because then your foot will get tired, which is obviously no good if you have to work for 10 hours a day. You want something that keeps your feet kind of stiff and not overly working and overly flexing. In terms of ground feel when you’re walking, you get two things. Number one, obviously, it feels like you’re standing on an absolute boatload of USA oak-tanned leather – there’s not a lot of feeling, not a lot of bending, and you’re not very close to the ground when you’re walking on these boots. The Mind-Blowing Arch Support The Iron Snail Now, the one thing that will shock you if you’ve never worn PNW boots or boots with very strong high arch support is the feeling of arch support. It is unreal on these and I shall explain what it feels like through the metaphor of a sock. Obviously, these boots have a heel – you may think though the bottom of these boots is flat when it’s not, it’s very, very heavily rounded, and pay attention to that. That will come in handy later when we talk about the heel. But what it feels like is – picture a rolled-up sock right under your foot; you’re not wearing a boot, you’re just gently putting your foot down on a sock. That’s essentially what it feels like, except the sock is in the perfect place where your foot is no longer splaying out and getting tired. It’s resting on the sock and supported, you know, technically by the rest of the boot. I guess the metaphor dies there. The Iron Snail I must admit I left a crucial part out of the walking, how they feel and stuff test, and that is range of motion. I left it out because it’s incredibly fascinating because it works for you and against you depending on what situation you’re in, but when it works for you, it is probably the nerdiest, coolest thing that I’ve ever heard – it’s hacking your foot and your strength. The Big Question: Why That Chunky Heel? The Iron Snail Why the F do these boots have a heel? Number one, I will reference Rose Anvil. You can use the heel as a lug to grip onto things and lock into things; that’s very useful. But number two, it’s what I was talking about before – you can see the outsole of these boots literally drips down because there is so much leather used for arch support that if you didn’t have a heel, you’d be walking on a weebly wobbly surface and that can’t happen. So you have to chunk a big heel on the boot in order to have that many layers of leather giving you support. The Iron Snail Most boot soles are perfectly flat, and walking around in them is no problem. You can add a little bit of a heel, but if it’s perfectly flat, it’s no big deal. JK boot soles are rounded up a bit, so now you need to essentially add a little platform so the rounded part doesn’t touch the ground; otherwise, you won’t have a lot of steadiness when you’re walking. Okay, so now we know arch support is important, but we don’t necessarily know why it’s important or how it helps you kind of fly up a mountain and still have all of your strength and make things easier, and really, why is it so important that we’re chunking giant heels to the bottom of boots. Before we get into dorsiflexion, we have to break down some of the smaller features of these boots. The Magic of Rough Out Leather The Iron Snail First things first – why rough out? Why are there two types of leather on this boot? Put simply, rough out does not show scratches the same as smooth leather. Rough out, the opposite side of the leather is rougher and tougher. It doesn’t scratch as easily – you have to get through all of the fibrous material and the fuzz before you can even begin to scratch the leather, so you have to move a ton of stuff out of the way before you’re damaging the leather. The Iron Snail Why did smokejumperbro on Reddit say the outsoles, these honey Vibram outsoles, are for office work like sewing and eating ice cream? Because there are different harder outsoles, I think there’s the V100 and the 100, and you might have to correct me on that. It is a black outsole. It is harder than the honey outsoles, so it lasts longer, but JK sometimes uses honey outsoles. They use all kinds of outsoles, so you can pick what you want. They sometimes use honey outsoles because people say the softness grips better when you’re going through certain terrains, so it does have its pluses and minuses. The Iron Snail Okay, and now for the spicy question – do these boots make your feet weaker? Obviously, if you’re walking barefoot, you are strengthening your feet to the max, so do they make your feet weaker? I mean, for their general purpose, it doesn’t even matter. It’s not like your feet are going to be so weak that you can’t walk on them or anything like that. These are logger boots, firefighter boots, and people working outside all day boots. No matter how strong your foot is, you’re going to get tired after 10 to 12 hours of fighting fires and lifting logs and heavy equipment. So technically, I mean, yeah, maybe you could get your feet stronger, but are you really going to tell a smoke jumper that he needs to do toe lifts after work? The Science of Dorsiflexion The Iron Snail Now, I will say walking around in these boots is actually incredible. I love it, I don’t feel like I have a lot of foot strain. I’m not doing anything incredibly strenuous, but they still feel great. It’s a pleasure to put them on, and they’re not even broken yet. I can see why all of the hype surrounds these boots. However, yesterday, I had these boots on, and I was running through the woods – not going for a run, but I was actually actively running through the woods, and this is where things get interesting because the boots were working for me and against me at the same time and this is why they have a heel. The Iron Snail Two very important things that you need to keep in mind: Number one, I am the epitome of a random guy on the internet, so talk to a doctor if you need a specific type of boot or shoes, but number two is that my boots are not fully broken in yet so they will get more flexible over time and break in even more. Dorsiflexion baby! Dorsiflexion is really – apparently, just the movement of your foot when you point your toes up but keep your heel on the ground. It’s important when we’re talking about these boots. The Iron Snail When I was running through the woods pretending to be a firefighter fighter, I noticed the range of my foot was limited. Usually, when you’re running, your foot is flexing all the way up and then most of the way down. You get just about the full range of motion. In these boots, I kind of stayed in the middle. Now the idea is that we have a golden range in power of our feet when we are going up inclines. It’s not overly superly high lifting your foot up all the way, it’s not overly super low, so by keeping your feet in the middle in that power range, you’re essentially completely avoiding the super high weak zone where you have less power to go up mountains and hills, which of course means you are fatiguing dramatically less as you do work all the day long because you’re using your most powerful range of motion. Watch This Review The Final Verdict Okay, so at the beginning of this article, I said these boots are technically not for everyone. I guess I should amend that because JK Boots will custom-make boots for you, which means, yes, these boots are for everyone. These boots are really everything I could have dreamed of and more – they’re amazing. I love just putting them on and walking around. It feels good; they feel like they’re built for you, and they’re molding to your feet over time. I love everything about them. So, if I needed firefighter boots, logger boots, construction worker boots, or something like that, I would love these even more because they would make my feet feel a lot better. The Iron Snail Hey Snailiens, Here’s the Deal I’m assuming that you’re already familiar with one of my pairs of boots. They are the first-ever boots to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. They are the Russell Moccasin Back Country boots. After 100 years, they have some tiny updates, but they are close to the original boots that Earl Shaffer wore on his first walk. Handmade in Berlin, Wisconsin – absolutely beautiful, my favorite boots of the entire collection. I think they’re so good-looking. The Iron Snail What’s up, Snailiens, it’s Michael! Today, we are looking at my entire boot collection, and you may have noticed recently that I have been doing these large collections – eight things I love, eight things I hate, whatever, whatever. The reason for that is because a certain girlfriend of mine, my only one, to be honest, Taylor is moving in with me, and I have a very small apartment in New York, so we can’t fit all this stuff. So the goal of today is to go over my 15 boots and basically get rid of all of them except three. Why not? Say hello again to the Russell Moccasin Back Countries. I will never sell these. I talked to the current CEO, Luke, about these boots, and he sent them to me for free. I feel very honored to have them, and that’s not the only reason I’m keeping them – they’re also my favorite. They’re incredibly beautiful, and the way they’re constructed means that they will last literally forever. If my great-great-grandson has tiny little ballerina baby feet like me, he’ll be rocking these until he passes them down to his grandson. The Iron Snail The first boot that I will be holding above the townspeople and chopping its head off is the Doc Martin 1460s. I actually do really like these boots. I am selling them but not selling them – I am keeping them. I’m probably just going to put them in long-term storage or something like that because having this gig means they’re a good comparison for other brands. Like I’m doing a Timberland review very soon, Doc Martens are going to come up, so I kind of have to keep them for that reason. And a very cool brand reached out to me and said, “Hey Michael, we made Doc Martin Killers, so can you compare those for us?” and I said, “Yeah, sure,” I could do that. The Iron Snail If there’s any interest in these boots, I’ll talk about them in a different article, but these are my Blundstone super heavy-duty work boots, whatever Blundstone calls them. They’re essentially like a Chelsea boot equivalent to Timberland Pros – steel toe, fire resistant, electrical hazardous resistance. They’re crazy. I saw someone wearing them on my block, and I was like, “Excuse me, what are those?” I thought they were waterproof – they are just a very, very water-resistant nubuck. My other Blundstones that we’ll talk about later are virtually waterproof for all intents and purposes. These are insane boots, and they add like two inches to my height. Every time I wear them, everybody thinks that I’m dressed way cooler than I actually am. These are the shoes that I was wearing when the fashion director of J.Crew saw me on the street and gave me an up and down. But they have to go because my beautiful queen is moving in. The Iron Snail The Red Wing 8833s – I talked about these literally in my last article. I said I didn’t like them and that I regretted buying them. I realized I love to look at them, but I don’t think they look that good on my feet, so who actually knows? The leather on them is incredibly beefy and may look soft, but it’s very rough and hard to move and bend. They’re work boots. And famous commenter Stacy Graham something, who I frankly can’t decide if this person likes me or if they hate me, but either way, they trashed all of my clothes, but they said boots are okay, so I am selling them or getting rid of them. The Iron Snail Next are the Jim Green Razorback boots in fudge. Jim Green has a really cool story – Gareth from Jim Green, like I’ve said before, sent me essentially every single boot that Jim Green has ever made. Razorbacks are by far my favorite and that is why I am keeping them. They’re super comfortable, they feel like tanks, they’ll age beautifully, they’ll last for a very long time, and they have a lot of padding, so if you’re going hiking for a long time, that’s good stuff. The Iron Snail Hoka Kaha GTX2 6000, whatever it may be – these are essentially computers for your feet. I don’t have a lot of techware. These are the first ever hiking modern maximalist crazy boots that I have. Whoa! I am writing an article comparing Russell Moccasins to these Hokas. I’m gonna go for hikes, and I’m gonna figure out what I like and what I don’t like about both of them, but these are something else. Even the way your feet go in, it feels like it’s this perfectly molded spaceship that locks your feet in and then floats you across the ground. So I’m keeping them for now. I’ll let you know my thoughts on that article. I have to hike up the same trail like 10 times. I got those boots from Huckberry, by the way, so thank you, Charles, for sending them to me for freezies. The Iron Snail Speaking of Huckberry, next are the Rhodes Portland boots, which are one of my favorite boots from a stylistic standpoint. I think they are absolutely gorgeous. I love the silhouette; it’s sleek, and it makes me, for some reason, want to shift the gear on a motorcycle. I’ve never even been on a motorcycle. I really love the boot. I am selling the boot just for the room because I’ve talked about this boot many times, so I have to let it go to get a new boot in the collection. The storm-welt construction and weather-resistant suede are really, really lovely. The Iron Snail These Blundstones hold a very special place in my heart because this is the first-ever review I did on the Iron Snail. It was these Blundstones, the 585s. You can tell I’ve worn them constantly since I got them – the leather is all beat up, it’s super shiny, there’s old wax conditioner, whatever it may be. They’ve held up through it all. They’ve remained probably my most water-resistant boots through it all. Blundstones are just incredible. I’m a big fan of them, I’ve always loved them. Some people seem to really not like them. I will get to RM Williams one day and test those out, but I think it’s time to retire these Blunnies. The Iron Snail I am on record saying that the Red Wing 3335s are my favorite Red Wings of all time, and they still might be, but they probably are not. The 875s, the 1907s, and the Iron Rangers all have their own characteristics that I really really like. The 3335s, though, I like because they’re stitch-down construction, they’re lighter weight, you can feel more nimble in them, they’re a little easier to go walking with, maybe a light hike or something like that, but they’re going. The Iron Snail I don’t really think of myself as a lazy person. I don’t step on the back of my shoes when I need to put them on quickly – I put my fingers in the back, and I slide them on to preserve the heel at all costs. Birkenstocks, Blundstones, and shoes I can just kind of flop on really quick – I love those because half the time, I’m just running to the post office. I’ll just put on regular sneakers really quickly. That’s why I love Xtratufs because Xtratufs, Blundstones, I guess they can be categorized together – they’re just shoes that, no matter the weather, I could flop on really quick and go grab something with, or if it’s raining, I’ll put them on. I don’t really care what shoes I’m wearing when it’s raining. I don’t care what they look like. That’s not true. I am a little self-conscious, so I’m keeping these, but I could easily put them on the sell list. The Iron Snail I’m making a last-minute change to these next boots – I’m changing whether I’m keeping them or not. They are my Solovair monkey boots. I’ve talked about these many, many times. I’ve talked about the QA issue I had where by the seventh wear, one of the laces ripped, and the back tab ripped out, and then Solovair sent me the wrong things and said, “Repair it yourself” – they said it a little bit nicer than that, but still. But through all of that, I really like these boots. The leather isn’t super thick or anything. They’re comfortable, but it feels like when I put my feet in the boots, they don’t know where to go. Not that there isn’t enough room for them, but there’s almost too much. They’re sliding about; they’re sliding forward; they’re sliding backward. It probably just means I sized wrong, but I would sell those, probably only to get another pair of monkey boots. The Iron Snail Hello Bean boots! Since I saw them, I’ve always just thought wow, those are just some of the most beautiful boots of all time. When people are wearing them, sometimes I don’t agree, but when they’re splayed open up top with the gusseted tongue and everything like that, I just think they are gorgeous boots. I have a pair that, if you want to know the truth, I was with a girl at the time when I was buying them, and I have very small feet, uncharacteristically small. Up until 8th grade, I was like a size four, but they got bigger eventually, and they’re like at eight or nine now. But when I was with that girl, the guy said, “Oh, I’ll go get your boots from the back. What size are you?” and I was like, “I’m a size 10.” These are just way too big on me, so I’m probably gonna get another pair, but in the meantime, I’m going to sell them. I didn’t want to tell you how small my feet were – I told Luke from Russell Moccasin the size of my feet, and he laughed on the phone in my face. If I told Luke that my size was anything smaller than a size eight, Russell Moccasin would have had to make me a custom boot. The Croc Western Boots Are Staying The Iron Snail Croc western boots – you could pry these from my cold, dead hands! There’s also apparently a substantial secondary market for them, so maybe I’ll make some money. Just kidding, Huckberry, I’m not gonna sell them! I would never do such a thing. I don’t even like money. I’m really not gonna sell them, though. In all honesty, I just feel like that would be bad from a brand-to-brand perspective. Or would it? No, I won’t sell them! Or will I? No! The Iron Snail The Viberg 145s. Incredibly legendary shoe boots – I thought they were discontinued, but apparently, they’re not. These are natural waxed flesh, absolutely gorgeous shoe boots. I wore them all through Amsterdam, and I rode bikes in Denmark with them. I had a lovely time, and I haven’t connected to them yet. I don’t think they’re fully broken in yet, maybe something like that, but they just didn’t grab me as much as I thought they would. I was like, “Wow, my first pair of Vibergs, I can’t wait to finally feel happy,” and then I didn’t. The Iron Snail And finally, the grand finale and the boots that started it all – long before the Iron Snail, I had my Instagram called Eighth Weekday, and Wolverine, the boot company, said, “Hey, we’re running a contest, take a picture of what you would wear with a pair of Wolverine Thousand Miles if you had them, and if you win we’ll give you a pair of boots.” I submitted like 800 pictures to this contest, and I won. I remember I won while I was in class in high school, and I thought this was the greatest day of my life. The most popular kid in high school actually said to me, “You know Michael, I think you’re gonna do really big things when you graduate high school and college,” and I said, “Thanks, Eric Steele!” I got the wrong size. They don’t fit me really well at all, the back heel is worn down, but when I got them, I remember I was so excited to open the box. I had never smelt leather before, like real leather, so I ran up to my dad and told him it smelled like a baseball glove. I asked him if it smelled right. I told them about the leather bottoms, how I had to be careful with what I walked on this and that. I wore them in college all the time, and I was like, these are the greatest things that I’ve ever seen, and since that time, I have been obsessed with clothing. It would just feel really weird to sell those boots because they were more than gold to me for a very, very long time. It’s a crazy full-circle thing. I’m very grateful that people watch this channel, and brands sometimes reach out and are really nice about it. I can’t thank you all enough for that.
